The Chrysion Standard
Every piece of real gold jewelry carries a measurable intrinsic value — determined by three things: karat (purity), weight (in grams or pennyweight), and the live spot price of gold. Understanding all three is the difference between a fair purchase and an overpaid one.
Pure gold — soft, deep yellow, rarely used for wearable jewelry.
Luxury standard — rich color with better durability than 24K.
The everyday sweet spot — durable, affordable, holds its value.
Entry-level gold — harder alloy, lower intrinsic gold weight.
Gold's intrinsic (melt) value is straightforward math. A 14K piece is only 58.3% pure gold — the rest is alloy for strength and color. So a 10-gram 14K chain contains ~5.83 grams of pure gold. Multiply that by today's spot price, and you have a real floor for its value — independent of any markup.
Retailers often price lighter, lower-karat pieces higher than heavier ones. Knowing the melt value protects you.
31.1 grams = 1 troy ounce, the unit gold is priced in worldwide.
A scale doesn't lie. Grams and pennyweight (1 dwt = 1.555 g) tell you exactly how much gold you're holding.
A heavy 10K piece can be worth less in gold than a lighter 18K piece. Always check the stamp.
Gold is a live market. The same chain is worth more this month than last — or less. Check the price of the day.
